RoboGEO
April 25, 2005
I blogged earlier about the UK "Geograph" project, a project that is undertaking to photograph every square kilometer of the UK. If you want to participate in this project/game then one bit of kit that you might find useful is RoboGEO.
RoboGEO is a software utility that allows you to combine GPS waypoint information into the EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) information on digital camera photographs (for more information on EXIF visit http://www.exif.org/).
The idea is simple. When you take a photo you also take a waypoint reading so that when you get back to your PC you can add the waypoint data to the image. This then digitally stamps the image with the GPS time, latitude, longitude and altitude . This information can then be read with an EXIF reader (Windows XP can do this but there are a variety of tools that you can download for free that can handle it also). You can optionally have this information displayed on the image too.
RoboGEO is not free (licenses start at $22.95 USD) but for anyone with a love of digital photography then this might be a very useful tool that allows them to catalog their images better.
