Got a GPS for Christmas? Part 1

December 27, 2005

Got a new GPS for Christmas and you want to get up to speed on using it?  This new set of posts is for you.  Over the next few days I'll give you a few tips on making the most of your new GPS receiver.

First, read the manual.  It might seem like a major chore but the manual (especially the quick start manual that many GPS receivers come with) will give you much of the important information that you'll need to allow you to work with your GPS receiver.

Some information hat you should pay particular attention to is;

  • What the buttons do - many of the buttons are likely to have multiple functions and the labeling can be a bit too concise to allow you to guess what they do.
  • Get a basic idea of what information the GPS menu screens provide.  Many GPS receivers allow you to customize the screens but initially it's probably best to leave everything in the default state.
  • Know how to create, edit and access waypoints.  This information will be useful later!

Play with your GPS indoors before venturing outdoors.  Get used to it and learn to navigate the interface.  The more time you give it now the easier, less stressful and much more productive it will be later!
