You can't rely on sat nav

March 23, 2007

No matter how much it's being sold as something you can rely on, putting your faith in sat nav is not sensible.

Take these two stories on BBC News:

  • Sat nav error puts an end to trip
A group of children had to abandon a school trip before even arriving - after a driver followed his satellite navigation to the wrong destination.
The Hampshire youngsters were heading for Hampton Court Palace, but ended up 18 miles away at a narrow north London street named Hampton Court.
  • GPS navigation plan to help blind
An Italian technology company is pioneering a GPS satellite system that will give blind people greater independence and mobility.
The Easy Walk service has been developed by Il Village, a firm in Turin in northern Italy.
It is currently being tested by a group of 30 people from the Italian Blind Union who are providing feedback. The plan is for Easy Walk to be launched to blind and partially sighted people in Piedmont in the autumn.

    Hmmm ...
